At Icon Accounting, one of our core values is to give back whenever we can. This month, we’re proud to highlight a charity: the Huntington’s Disease Association of Ireland (HDAI). We kindly encourage our contractor community to consider supporting the vital work this organisation does for individuals and families impacted by Huntington’s disease, both during this time of year and throughout the coming year.

What is Huntington’s Disease?
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a rare hereditary condition that causes the gradual breakdown of nerve cells in specific parts of the brain. It is triggered by a faulty gene that produces a toxic protein, damaging the brain’s cells. Over time, HD impacts the body’s nervous system, affecting movement, learning, cognition, and emotions. Over the course of the illness, from 15 to 25 years on average, people living with HD will lose the ability to walk, talk, eat and manage their self-care. In addition, people experience thinking difficulties, and emotional and mental health changes. Each child of a parent with Huntington’s disease has a 50% chance of inheriting the faulty gene. Since the discovery of the HD gene in 1993, research has advanced significantly, leading to clinical trials aimed at developing therapies to halt or slow the disease’s progression.
The Human Impact of HD
Families affected by Huntington’s disease often experience generational trauma, witnessing one or more loved ones battle the illness over time. Children have to contend with being at risk themselves while watching their parent struggle with the disease. Many families find it difficult to talk openly about the disease due to a fear of genetic discrimination and of disclosing information about other family members. The disease poses significant challenges for the person affected but also for family care givers and other family members at risk.
Who is the Huntington’s Disease Association of Ireland (HDAI)?
Founded in 1985 by family members of those affected, the Huntington’s Disease Association of Ireland provides essential information and support to individuals and families navigating HD. HDAI also advocates for greater awareness among healthcare professionals and policymakers, working tirelessly to improve services and understanding of this complex condition.
How Can Donations Help?

- Family Support Services: Providing a dedicated Family Support Officer.
- Financial Wellbeing Services: Offering practical guidance and assistance.
- Advocacy and Signposting: Ensuring families access the services they need.
- Counselling and Support Meetings: Helping families navigate the emotional challenges of HD.
